3 million euros in play at poker tournament in Cannes

The big news in Cannes poker is that the Main Event of the Season 3 Partouche Poker Tournament will take place September 2-7 2010 at the Palm Beach Casino in Cannes. The organisers are guaranteeing a monumental €3 million in prize money, which makes it one of France’s most important events. The last season saw some 35,000 people battle it out for the prize, with the final table broadcast live on EuroSport.

Free open-air cinema in Cannes this summer

If you’re looking for things to do in Cannes this summer, why not enjoy some free open-air cinema? Every year, the city organises a series of shows that are free and open to all. The films are recent hits, dubbed in French. All you have to do is turn up on time for a seat (or two). Our tip is to bring a light blanket, as it can get chilly sitting for two hours in the evening – specially if you have been sunbathing on the Croisette during the day!

Electronic music on the beach in Cannes this summer

On July 13, the beach at Cannes will become a massive dancefloor for the fifth time. Between now and August 17, five nights of electronic music will bring together a happy crowd for what is France’s only beach festival. Les Plages Electroniques is a fun event, attracting a young crowd from across the south of France. Headliners this year include Derrick May, Norman Jay, Crookers, DJ Marky and MC Stamina and many others.

With Riviera weather, one of the world’ most glamourous beaches, the opportunity to splash around listening to some great electronic music, Les Plages Electroniques is a must-see this summer. The shows tend to sell out, so our tip is to book a ticket early (see the site below).

International Fashion Photography festival

For the 8th year, Cannes is celebrating the best in fashion photography with an exhibition in a number of venues around town. This year, the International Festival of Fashion Photography invited the noted fashion photographer Jacques Olivar.

The Palm Beach Casino, main partner of this event, hosts on its cymas the 2010 selection of contemporary photography creation. Ninety fashion photographers from different backgrounds present their creations on 1 m x 1.50 m printings. On the terrace of the Palm Beach Casino, a selection of 32 photographs among Jacques Olivar’s work shows the great strength of his pictures, printed on 3 m x 3 m sheets and put on spotlighted structures, so that the exhibition can be seen day and night.

Invited by the festival, German photographer Irish Brosch said, “I’m fond of this nice festival. Because it’s not huge, it’s a very warm and agreeable event where people coming from all over the world can meet among wonderful photographs. The festival key word is pleasure, only pleasure really.”

Whose Cannes is it anyway?

“Where is the Cannes festival being held this year?” OK, you’ve probably read this quote so many times already you are sick of it. I am. Was it really said by Britney Spears or Christine Aiguilera? I’m not even sure. The quote just keep spinning around the web.

But the way people talk about Cannes can be unsettling. Open up any trade magazine and there will be debates about the importance of Cannes, the relevance of Cannes or even if Cannes will be held this year at all. They are not talking about the town, of course. They are talking about their 5-day vision of it at the trade fairs and festivals.

“Are you going to Cannes this year?”
“Are you going to Cannes this year?” could be an inquiry about the Cannes festival, Midem, MIPIM, the yacht show, Cannes Lions or the horse event. It’s flattering but also a little worrying that the name of the town is synonymous with so many events that are held there. Think of Hoover and Xerox, which lost their capital letters to become a vacuum cleaner and a photocopy. The truly bizarre question to ask people that live in Cannes is, “When is Cannes this year?” Um, it’s actually there quite often, guys.

“To hoover” is also a verb in Ireland. So how long is it before Cannes becomes a verb? Which one would it be? The verb, “to attend a trade fair”? Or the verb, “to spend some time on the Riviera”? To do deals? To go on a jolly? To shimmy up the Croisette? Would you say, “I’m going to cannes over to London for a few days”? Or, “How about cannesing to Venice for the festival?”

iPhones, databases and not leaving home
The question is all the more relevant as with the rise of databases and social media, Cannes has become pretty much a 12-month event. You can tap into the Midem or Cinando databases and do business with people that were at Cannes right around the year. Many of the events have iPhone apps that let you participate without leaving home. To make things even more complex, many of these trade fairs have larger and larger overlaps, as filmed content can be found at MIPDOC, Cannes Lions, the Cannes festival MIPTV and MIDEM, and music is at all five too.

Will it one day just become one big blob of an event that runs like a convenience store? Or a smaller one held every weekend like a car boot sale? As trade fairs and festival begin to morph and adapt to the new business landscape, Cannes will have to define itself too. And I know just what to call it: Cannes.

MicroStrategy World to be held in Cannes, July 2010

Marine Trade Centre to offer shared presence at Cannes Boat Show

Attending the Cannes Yacht Show as an exhibitor can be expensive. So here’s a tip: the Marine Trade Centre is offering to share a stand and therefore costs. The largest consumer-oriented shows can be beyond the financial and organisational means of the many smaller businesses which are taking their first steps to develop their export sales, or simply trying to reach a wider audience in their home market.

The Marine Trade Centre addresses this by bringing together a group of like-minded companies onto a single stand, thereby sharing the costs of exhibition space, transport, stand building and manpower. Dennis Hopper RIP

Actor, director and all-round Hollywood legend has died in Venice, California, of cancer at the age of 74. Hopper, who first came to fame with “Easy Rider”, had a very varied career but was a regular visitor to Cannes. The above clip from French archives shows him and Dean Stockwell riding along the Croisette in Cannes. In the subsequent mini-interview, they complain about their lack of work. Hopper has his hand prints embedded in the square in front of the Palais.
