Sailing lessons in Cannes

When you think Cannes, you immediately think of the Croisette and the beaches. But why not try something beyond the beaches, like learning how to sail? In Cannes, there are currently two options.

The first is the Club Nautique de la Croisette, located at the Bijou Plage near Palm Beach. the Club organises lessons for children, teenagers and adults Monday to Friday in July and August as well as rentals. They also organise outings and picnics on Ile St Marguerite. Five lessons cost €126, although you might have to become a member of the club. The other option is also located at the Bijou Plage. Mer et Montagne offers lessons for 5-16 year-olds and rentals. Five half-days and a trip to Ile Ste Marguerite costs from €180. Get more details on 06 81 25 28 53.

Prince candidate for Nice Jazz Festival

Since Prince played Nice in France yesterday and followed up the show with an after party at the Palais club in Cannes, rumours have been circulating that the Minneapolis musician has plans to take over the Nice Jazz Festival. The annual event has been leaking money for some time, and it is known that the local authorities are anxious to rejuvenate it.

An article in France’s Le Monde provides more details about Prince’s plans. According to Pascal Bernardin, who would be one of the partners in the project, Prince had spoken about the idea of running an artist-friendly festival already. He and his musicians are also big jazz fans. So the idea to put in a project grew from a series of meetings, leading to a formal submission recently.

The idea of Prince acting as artistic director of a jazz festival is a nice one, no pun intended. However, there are a number of serious obstacles. First, there are other very serious competitors putting in tenders. Secondly, the town of Nice itself could complicate matters. It is known that they want to reduce the amount they put into the festival, while at the same time attracting larger profile artists and also reducing the ticket prices. This sounds almost impossible. Thirdly, there is also talk of moving the festival into the city centre, which would doubtless meet resistance from locals and shopkeepers. Fourthly, I can only guess at the sort of friction that could arise from a maverick talent such as Prince having to deal with the Nice local authorities. Lastly, the winning candidate would also have to contend with the Jazz à Antibes festival, a prestigious event that celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and is loved by musicians. In an unfortunate lack of foresight, it is held at the same time as Nice Jazz! Are there enough jazz fans in the south of France to support two side-by-side jazz festival at a distance of some 20 kms?

The idea is certainly an interesting one. But whoever wins the day – and one can only hope that they will have some new ideas to inject into the jazz festival formula – will have quite a challenge. Prince fans might want to look out of the most recent issue of Le Courrier International, which features his latest album as a giveaway.

TFWA adds more space – and new VP

The exclusive travel fair TFWA will be increasing its space next September, using the new Golden Village and Marine Croisette areas in the Palais des Festivals.

Among the companies to occupy space in the new Golden Village extension are long-time exhibitor Hugo Boss; Brioni, the Italian fashion label that made its travel retail debut at TFWA Asia Pacific & GATE ONE2ONE earlier this year; Hong Kong design brand Shanghai Tang, returning to the exhibition; and Polaroid Eyewear, making its first appearance at a TFWA event.

Among new and returning exhibitors are those making their first ever appearance at a TFWA event, such as Polaroid Eyewear, Chinese cosmetics brand Herborist, La Martiniquaise rum and Danish jewellery supplier Dyrberg. For others this will be the first TFWA World Exhibition after exhibiting at TFWA Asia Pacific & GATE ONE2ONE earlier this year, such as Brioni, Murano glassware producer Formia, cosmetics company Condensé Paris and Château d’Esclans wines.

In separate news, TFWA also announced that Erik Thomsen, Regional Manager Europe – Global Travel Retail at William Grant & Sons has been appointed Vice-President Commercial on the TFWA Board.

3 million euros in play at poker tournament in Cannes

The big news in Cannes poker is that the Main Event of the Season 3 Partouche Poker Tournament will take place September 2-7 2010 at the Palm Beach Casino in Cannes. The organisers are guaranteeing a monumental €3 million in prize money, which makes it one of France’s most important events. The last season saw some 35,000 people battle it out for the prize, with the final table broadcast live on EuroSport.

Free open-air cinema in Cannes this summer

If you’re looking for things to do in Cannes this summer, why not enjoy some free open-air cinema? Every year, the city organises a series of shows that are free and open to all. The films are recent hits, dubbed in French. All you have to do is turn up on time for a seat (or two). Our tip is to bring a light blanket, as it can get chilly sitting for two hours in the evening – specially if you have been sunbathing on the Croisette during the day!

Electronic music on the beach in Cannes this summer

MIPCOM 2010 to focus on financing

MIPCOM, to be held October 4-8 this year, will have a special focus on financing. The TV and content trade fair will host a Producers’ Forum designed to help the right content find the right financing opportunities through conferences and networking events. The goal is to enable people to develop the contacts and content needed to secure financing through production funding, co-production deals and collaboration with film commissions from around the world.

Focus: Australia

A line-up of expert speakers will show how working in Australia can create opportunities that exist nowhere else, with networking and speed-dating events to boost contacts between participants.

As in previous years, MIPCOM will be preceded by Mip Junior.

International Fashion Photography festival

For the 8th year, Cannes is celebrating the best in fashion photography with an exhibition in a number of venues around town. This year, the International Festival of Fashion Photography invited the noted fashion photographer Jacques Olivar.

The Palm Beach Casino, main partner of this event, hosts on its cymas the 2010 selection of contemporary photography creation. Ninety fashion photographers from different backgrounds present their creations on 1 m x 1.50 m printings. On the terrace of the Palm Beach Casino, a selection of 32 photographs among Jacques Olivar’s work shows the great strength of his pictures, printed on 3 m x 3 m sheets and put on spotlighted structures, so that the exhibition can be seen day and night.

Invited by the festival, German photographer Irish Brosch said, “I’m fond of this nice festival. Because it’s not huge, it’s a very warm and agreeable event where people coming from all over the world can meet among wonderful photographs. The festival key word is pleasure, only pleasure really.”
