The jury of the 2011 edition of the International Festival of Fashion Photography is composed of key figures belonging to the world of photography such as Peter KNAPP, artistic director, Jean-Luc MONTEROSSO, director of The European House of Photography in Paris, Fred RAWYLER, artistic director. They will give three awards according to the creativity, imagination and daring of the artists’ work – their ability to fire one’s imagination.

The photographers themselves are usually delighted to see their work outside of magazines. Said Sweden’s Elisabeth Toll: “I think the Festival shows the fluctuations in the contemporary fashion world in an extraordinary way, presenting the images along the Croisette, inviting all the passers-by to participate in the glamour. It is also
a rare opportunity for photographers to come together and discuss our work with colleagues instead of clients or agents. I feel very spoilt to have the chance to participate in this project.”

Under the supervision of the Franco-Moroccan director Mohammed Ahed BenSouda, the international jury will be rating films from Ivory Coast, Niger, Namibia, Morocco, Tunisia, Haiti and elsewhere. Many of the films are co-productions and will all too often not get an official theatrical release in Europe.

The festival is also noted for its varied musical and fashion programme (come on, this is Cannes after all). Highlights this year include a N’Goni master at the opening gala at the Martinez (April 13), Kristo Numpuby’s (photo) highly-rated adaptations of George Brassens (Thursday, April 14), M’Toro Chamou on the 16th and Le Must du Jazz Tangora on Sunday 17.

Ruelle joined Radio France in 1969, which became RFI two years later.  Working there as a journalist, she began specializing in cinema in 1973, producing Dialogues, Cinémas Sans Frontières and L’Actualité du Cinéma.
  A film critic for many publications (Afrique-Asie, Le Monde Diplomatique …) and founder of the association Racines, which she has chaired since 1984, Catherine Ruelle has organized festivals and events devoted to Pan-African Film – Racines Noires, Rencontres des Cinémas du Monde Noir, Ciné-Contes avec Makéna Diop, et le Ciné-Club Afrique à Paris, since January 2005.
  Since 1979, she has worked in various capacities as President, or member of the Organizing Committee of international film festivals in Paris, Cannes, Milan and Geneva.

In 1980, she co-organized the first festival ever in Europe that celebrates Black American independent filmmakers and with her founding of Racines in 1984 she produced the first annual International Roots Film Festival at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
  She has also co-founded in partnership with acclaimed Senegalese director Mahama Traoré the special award Djibril Diop Mambety at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2008 she was appointed Artistic Director of Midsummer’s Night Dream Digital Film Festival in Paris.
  Jury member for numerous festivals including Fespaco, the Festival of African Cinema of Milan and the Festival of Paris, she co-authored several books (including CinemAction in 1978, with Guy Hennebelle and The Birth of African Cinema, with Alessandra Speciale Turin, 1998) and undertaken with the Cameroonian journalist Samé Ngosso a study of film and TV in Africa (UNESCO, 1982).

The Pan-African Film Festival was created to celebrate movies from Africa and the African diaspora, and is now one of the most prestigious dates on the African festival circuit. In addition to cinema,e it also showcases fashion.

The list of teachers and performers is impressive, with Cliford Jasmin of Salsabor, Super Mario from London, Falco & Virginia, Oasis Latina, Terry & Cécile and many more. Each night, DJs will keep the dancefloors spinning until the wee hours.

Caran d'Ache boutique in Geneva airport

New exhibitors this year include Polaroid Eyewear, Chinese cosmetics brand Herborist, La Martiniquaise rum and Danish jewellery supplier Dyrberg. Each will, needless to say, be bringing stylish products in their suitcases. Amongst the premieres this year will be the new Manon range from Belgian chocolate manufacturer Duc d’O and the unveiling of new retail space for the Caran d’Ache writing supplier (photo).

In other news, Lebanese/British pop star Mika will be performing at the Grand Auditorium as part of the Premium evening, which includes dinner and and après-show party on the beach. But you’ll have to blag yourself onto the guest list for this one as it by invitation only.

Closing night at the Plages Electroniques festival was dubbed the Minimal night, featuring local heroes and the German duo Tiefschwarz. Unsurprisingly, the grooves were pretty pared down, sometimes close to old school electro. But before talking about the music, it’s worth mentioning the festival itself. The Plages Electroniques is France’s only beach festival, held right under the wing of the Palais des Festivals. As this is a very public beach, the organisers have to set up and dismantle the stage and facilities every single night, so bathers can enjoy the beach unimpeded during the day. It has also become of the south of France’s key events, drawing electronic music fans from far. The crowd is incredibly up for the vibes, creating a party atmosphere.

First up has H-Tenza, who refers to Italo-House and disco as references, although that is not apparent when you check his tracks. Personal favourites were Sw4p Ctrl, a four-piece outfit that build tracks live on stage. I was reminded of Jeff Mills in that there are lots of layers, but the sound is brighter and less abrasive. Local hero Nicolas Massayeff got a great response from the crowd, although I fond the style a bit too streamlined. But it certainly hit the right spots with the audience. The German duo Tiefschwarz rounded off the night, with a set that was indeed very minimal.
