As I write this, we’re just a few weeks from Cannes 2012. Accommodation is a bit of an issue by now, but there are a few good value locations left. Most of the deals are in Juan-les-Pins and Mandelieu, both of which are just 10 minutes by train from Cannes station. The only downside is that you have to be careful about missing the last train or bus back to the hotel.

Hotels in Juan-les-Pins

In Juan-les-Pins, one of the best offers is Hotel Teranga. Located just 50 meters from Juan-les-Pins railway station, this small hotel has its own garden (nice for breakfast) but no parking spaces.

The Hotel Savoy is a small property with good reviews close to the station. It offers good value, but Juan-les-Pins is surprisingly busy ayt night. So bear that in mind.

Further from the station, you’ll find the Villa Nina. This is closer to the bus route, which is handy, particularly as you can reach the airport directly for €1.5! However, I have sometimes been stuck as buses into Cannes were full and didn’t stop. Note that the hotel is near railway tracks. In doubt, I’d recommend bringing earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

Hotels in Mandelieu

Over in Mandelieu, Parks & Suites Village offers good value residence accommodation at about 10-15 minutes from the railway station. MMV Resorts has a charming lake and rooms. It would be best to have access to a car, however.

Studios in Cannes

Last thing: studios available in Cannes itself. L’esperance has a number of studios. located in Le Suquet, it is about 10 minutes to the Palais by foot.

Like something out of a mobile technology tradefair, one flat hotel in Cannes is introducing mobile keys to its customers. At Citadines Apart’hotels on the Boulevard Carnot, guests and residents can avoid the front desk if they already have a booking and go straight to their flats. They can use their mobile phones as an apartment key.

“We are very pleased to bring Mobile Key by OpenWays to France through The Ascott Limited and its Citadines Apart’hotels brand,” said Pascal Metivier, OpenWays Founder and CEO. “With Mobile Key, people check-in on their own terms. Because this is apartment-type living (extended stay), there is no need for residents and guests to interact with staff unless a specific service is needed. We are confident in the success of this pilot program.”

Citadines Apart’hotel is located on the main road towards the motorway, at about 20 minutes on foot to the Palais.

Convenience for Cannes hotel guests

Citadines Apart’hotels offer the accommodations and privacy of an apartment while offering travelers and residents the conveniences of a hotel. There are many such establishments in Cannes and the environs, which cater for people that consider hotels as a function rather than a service.

People that might arrive in Cannes late or leave early certainly benefit from the system, as some flat hotels only have desk staff during office hours.

Besides, we have automatic check-in on planes, so why not at Cannes hotels as well?

Although things move at a slow pace in Cannes hotels, things are definitely changing for the better. The news this week is that the Hotel Colette has been rated four stars. The hotel located almost opposite the railway station has now become a stylish and friendly place to stay for people that like great location.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: what you don’t get at the Colette are the palm trees and shimmering sea views you associate with Cannes. This is a hotel rooted in one of the busiest areas of town. On the other hand, you are still only a five minute walk from the Croisette, beach and Palais (if you are attending Midem, MIPIM or the Cannes Film festival). There are also many places to eat and drink, with a busy open air market just around the corner.

Tips for staying in downtown Cannes

Although Hotel Colette boasts about its soundproofed windows, if you are a light sleeper I would still advise you to do the same as in any downtown hotel in any city: bring a set of earplugs. They really are better than spending a night complaining about scooters or car horns. If you don’t need them, they don’t take up much space in your luggage.

The Hotel Colette has 47 rooms, including two suites. Business travelers will appreciate the free wi-fi in rooms and public spaces. There is a business centre and cosy reading space. The hotel also offers assistance with printing and the use of computers as well as laundry and shoeshine services. Electric bikes are available for guests, which is very handy for visiting the town or getting around when the roads are blocked off for the festival.

All in all, the Colette has been developed for business travellers that enjoy somewhere friendly to stay. Another advantage is that the train can drop you within 10 minutes of the airport for just over €5.

Check for availability at the Colette right now

There is a lot to be said for 2-star accommodation in Cannes. If you are hesitating about attending a trade fair, it is far better to come and reduce the budget than to stay away, in my opinion. But you have to find a hotel that offers a good deal.

Amongst the cheap but commendable 2-star hotels in Cannes, le Mistral Hotel is worth checking. It is located on the Rue des Belges, about two blocks away from the Palais. This already means you can forget about taxis, shuttle buses or long walks. It’s easy to drop back to the hotel after a day in the Palais (or beach), freshen up and head to the restaurant.

Friendly service

Rooms at Le Mistral are smallish, but modern and perfectly usable. The service has been friendly from every account I have heard. The breakfast is fine (which is already an exception in Cannes), and you are right in the heart of Cannes anyway so you can always find one to your liking a street away at most. The only real downside of the hotel is the fact that there are no lifts, and you might find yourself lugging luggage to the top of the building. But that’s just one more reason to remember the golden rule of travel: travel light.

So you get a comfortable stay in a pleasant hotel at very competitive rates, which makes Le Mistral a Cannes or Bust type of hotel!

Le Mistral Hotel can be reached by foot from both the station and the bus terminus (which is a little further). Check now for availability.

If you have had any experience at Le Mistral, drop a message below.

If you have been trying to book a room for Cannes Lions 2011, it’s no news that the tow n is pretty full. Yet Cannes or Bust has a few accommodation deals.

First up: the Fauvettes studio for 2 people (double bed). Stay just 15 minutes walking distance from the Palais. This hyper-practical sunny 29m² studio with a large 10m² terrace offers a small view of the sea and a magnificent view of the 19th century Vallambrosa castle.

You are within 5 min walking distance of the beach and close to the restaurants of Le Suquet area. A lot of shops and facilities are around the building. Price EUR600 + stay an extra week for just EUR400 more (is it not time that your BF/GF/significant other discovered the region?). Check it here

The Oxford hotel has a few rooms from EUR650 for 5 nights (special offer). You might need a taxi to reach the Palais though Find it here

Villa Carnot has studios in the central Boulevard Carnot from EUR 1750 for up to 4 people. Find it here

But you share the cost and are closer to the Palais.

Share a room or a taxi

If you have an apartment or large hotel room, why not share costs? I opened a small forum for Cannes visitors. Drop a note with what you have or what you are looking for. Why not share a cab, as they can cost upwards of EUR 90 from the airport. Check the forum.

Cannes is synonymous with luxury and excess. But needless to say, it’s not all like that. For very many people, the time and money spent in Cannes has to be carefully weighed up against possible returns in a difficult market.

If that is you, cheer up! You can stay in Cannes for very reasonable rates if you follow the Cannes or Bust selection.

The bad news is that staying inside Cannes for this year’s festival is almost impossible without staying in the more expensive hotels. If this is your first time and you intend for there to be a second, remember to book by December. In many cases, you won’t be charged beforehand! It’s possible that hotels will be freed up later when people start cancelling (some people book generously for groups and then free them up at the last minute). So don’t despair.

If you’re looking for cheap accommodation, you will most likely end up in Juan-les-Pins, Golfe Juan, Le Cannet or Cannes La Bocca. They are only 5 minutes by train (one every 20 minutes on average, last one around midnight). Add to that a few minutes to reach the station.

Examples in Juan-les-Pins:

M Hôtel (roughly €80/night single)
Best Western Astoria (roughly €75/night sharing)
Les Strelitzia (photo – roughly €120/night sharing – comfortable and good value, just a little further from the station)
Hotel Résidence (roughly €85/night sharing)

Example in Le Cannet:

Hotel Thomas (roughly €125/night sharing. Note that it gets mixed reviews)

You get the picture: Cannes can be cheap when sharing! Prices are indicative, and subject to change. These hotels were available for the Cannes Festival at the time of going live. You can also save money by not taking a taxi from the airport (shuttle bus €17, train €5.20 instead of taxi €90).

I’ve never stayed in a camp site, but know some people that did. They shared a chalet and were laughing at the price. However, they had access to a car.

Bungalow Camping in Mandelieu has chalets at €340 a week.

Parc Bellevue is closer to Cannes, has weekend chalet deals for €100 and camping spots €9-13. The issue is always access. There are buses from Cannes La Bocca.

Le Ranch is in Cannes Le Cannet, just above the town.

It’s advisable to double-check public transport. My gut feeling is still a cheap hotel in Juan-les-Pins!

If you’re still searching closer to the date, let me know. One last thing, Cannes or Bust has preferential rates for apartments in Cannes (10%). At this stage, they are €1500 upwards for the week. For that price, you’re right in the centre of town and it’s handy to be able to nip back for a shower or whatever.

Note, these include affiliate links. You might be able to get a better rate by finding the hotels directly (not through another booking engine). I’ve given up on this and go with booking.com every time. It’s fast and secure.

In early 2012, the Hotel Ambassadeur, located in the heart of Juan-les-Pins, will be re-branded a Renaissance Hotel under a management agreement with Jesta Group. The Renaissance Antibes Juan-les-Pins Hotel will join the JW Marriott Hotel Cannes (previously Palais Stephanie) as Marriott continues to expand on the Cote d’ Azur.

Juan-les-Pins, a small seaside resort between Nice and Cannes, is a popular holiday destination with the international jet-set, boasting beaches, boating and nightlife. The “pins” refer to the umbrella pine trees known for widely inhabiting the destination. The Hotel Ambassadeur is located in the heart of the town, near the famous La Pinede Gould, renowned for hosting the annual “Jazz A Juan” International Jazz Festival every July.

In 2009, the 221 guestrooms and suites of the Ambassadeur underwent a multi-million euro renovation.

Located in a lush and tranquil setting, the Renaissance Antibes Juan-les-Pins will boast both indoor and outdoor pools, a pool-side grill and is located a short 200 meter walk from Ambassadeur beach, the hotel’s private sandy beach. In addition, the hotel is located adjacent to Juan-le-Pin’s new state-of-the-art congress center.

Last year, Marriott announced its goal of doubling its portfolio in Europe by 2015. The 221-room Renaissance Antibes Juan-les-Pins Hotel and the 261-room JW Marriott Hotel Cannes join 23 additional hotels currently under development in Europe. In separate news, the Marriott group recently announced its intention to no longer offer porn films as in-room entertainment.

In recent months, Radission Blu and JW Marriott have taken over hotels in Cannes.

Following the news that the 1835 White Palm in Cannes has just become the Radisson Blu comes the news that the Palais Stephanie will soon become the JW Marriott in a management agreement with Jetsa Group.

The hotel was built on the former site of the Palais des Festivals of Cannes, the original site of the International Film Festival from its inception in 1946 to the mid 1980s. Recently renovated, the design reflects its glamorous film heritage, paying tribute to the film stars of the past including Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, and Elizabeth Taylor.

On a practical level, the hotel’s location on the Croisette and its ample roof mean that it is often used by film and TV companies as their headquarters during the festival and market. The JW Marriott Hotel Cannes will offer an 820-seat theatre auditorium and 16 meeting rooms with 12,900 square-feet of flexible space. Its recent renovation (and re-naming) brought it a five-star rating. Marriott is currently in acquisition mode in Europe.
