The winners of the 2010 Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards will be announced at the historic City of Nice Opera House, as part of the Seatrade Med Cruise Convention.

These highly respected industry accolades, including the renowned Cruise Personality of the Year Award, will be presented in true French Riviera style – in the opulent surrounds of the Opéra de Nice, designed and constructed in 1882 by François Aune, a student of Gustave Eiffel.

Short-listed nominees are:

The Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards take place during an evening of music performed by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra, part of Seatrade Med’s delegate social programme. The evening is hosted by the City of Nice with Insider Awards’ principal sponsorship from Fidelio Cruise Software GmbH and individual award sponsorship from the Mauro Terrevazzi Foundation and V. Ships (Cruise Personality of the Year) and MedCruise (Environmental Initiative Award).

Seatrade Med 2010 opens its doors on Tuesday 30 November, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, for two and a half days of high-level industry conference, a major exhibition, Cruise Agent Day by Top Cruise and an exciting social programme. This is the first time the convention will be held in France, organised in association with the French Riviera Cruise Club and supported by MedCruise.

Sailing lessons in Cannes

When you think Cannes, you immediately think of the Croisette and the beaches. But why not try something beyond the beaches, like learning how to sail? In Cannes, there are currently two options.

The first is the Club Nautique de la Croisette, located at the Bijou Plage near Palm Beach. the Club organises lessons for children, teenagers and adults Monday to Friday in July and August as well as rentals. They also organise outings and picnics on Ile St Marguerite. Five lessons cost €126, although you might have to become a member of the club. The other option is also located at the Bijou Plage. Mer et Montagne offers lessons for 5-16 year-olds and rentals. Five half-days and a trip to Ile Ste Marguerite costs from €180. Get more details on 06 81 25 28 53.

MIPIM yacht rentals down, but that's hardly news

According to a report in Britain’s The Daily Telegraph, not all the 100 yachts that had been booked for Mipim will be used. In fact, they give the precise figure of 36 being cancelled. If true, this is not surprising. It’s obvious that given the current financing crisis, most companies are looking more carefully at expenses. What is sometimes overlooked, however, is that these yachts also double up as accommodation. The incredible popularity of Mipim means that people are sometimes in hotels as far away as Nice, which is very impractical. Last year, the organisers even parked a liner in the bay to help with accommodation, although rough weather meant that some of the guests couldn’t get off!

A quick look at the hotel bookings in Cannes shows that there are still rooms available close to town.

On its site, Mipim points out that a downturn in property value offers better opportunities for investors. It also highlights a number of interesting projects in Shanghai, Paris, Duisburg and Cologne.

I couldn’t help noticing that Reed Midem are offering rooms aboard a liner for Mipim this year. I’m not too sure what to think. Given the extraordinary number of people that attend Mipim, it makes sense to stay in the bay rather than in places as far away as Nice. Plus, boats are romantic (kind of). I’ve joined Stella Artois when they had luxury liners in the bay. What can I say? One gets used to 5-star treatment after a while! Plus, it really is nice to wake up aboard a boat. The MV Rhapsody is not quite 5-star. But it’s still worth considering, with prices from €350 per night per cabin. For details, visit the Mipim Boat.

Death of an eccentric

For years, pontoon B in the Old Port of Cannes was home for what many people considered the quintessential “English eccentric”. His dilapidated old yacht stood out from his neighbours, some of the most luxurious vessels on the Riviera. It was his home for some 20 years. Last January, however, the frail body of the 91 year-old was discovered floating not far from his yacht. As no next of kin could be found, he was given a pauper’s funeral.

200 classic yachts to descend on Cannes

There are already a good number of sailing events in Cannes, but the upcoming Cannes Régates Royales in September will probably cap them all. It will feature 100 year-old yachts – some up to 50 meters long – in a spectacular regatta. The bay at Cannes is almost perfect for this, as it is wide and features a number of islands. It is, however, noted for its unpredictable wind changes.
