Like every year, Cannes will host a firework festival that runs throughout the season. Since 1967, this has become one of the foremost attractions in the season, with some of the world’s finest firework companies offering shows that last between 25-30 minutes. The shows can be seen from the Croisette, with the hotels offering parties (and their balconies) to enjoy the spectacle. Follow the Cannes Twitter feed for last-minute news.

New Year’s firework show in Cannes

It’s not exactly news that Cannes has a superb tradition of spectacular fireworks. The summer-long fireworks festival has a mid-winter extension, as the winner of the festival is invited to provide the annual firework show on New Year’s Eve. In 2010, this means that Fabrice Chouillier will be treating the thousands of Cannois and guests on December 31 at midnight. The theme is “Cannes Dance Fire”. The show takes place in the bay, with the Croisette, its hotels and beach offering the best views (and sometimes parties, such as the salsa night at the Palais Stéphanie). An alternative is to rent a boat and watch from the bay itself.

The firework show is always very popular, so you can expect congestion and traffic jams before and after. best to leave the car on the far side of the voie rapide or come by train (just don’t miss the last one home!).

TFWA, the annual luxury fair, will kick off next month in Cannes with a number of innovations. The most important is at the site itself, which now features a larger space, the new Golden Village and Marine Croisette areas.

New exhibitors this year include Polaroid Eyewear, Chinese cosmetics brand Herborist, La Martiniquaise rum and Danish jewellery supplier Dyrberg. Each will, needless to say, be bringing stylish products in their suitcases. Amongst the premieres this year will be the new Manon range from Belgian chocolate manufacturer Duc d’O and the unveiling of new retail space for the Caran d’Ache writing supplier (photo).

In other news, Lebanese/British pop star Mika will be performing at the Grand Auditorium as part of the Premium evening, which includes dinner and and après-show party on the beach. But you’ll have to blag yourself onto the guest list for this one as it by invitation only.

Electronic music on the beach in Cannes this summer

On July 13, the beach at Cannes will become a massive dancefloor for the fifth time. Between now and August 17, five nights of electronic music will bring together a happy crowd for what is France’s only beach festival. Les Plages Electroniques is a fun event, attracting a young crowd from across the south of France. Headliners this year include Derrick May, Norman Jay, Crookers, DJ Marky and MC Stamina and many others.

MassiveMusic celebrates 10th anniversary at Cannes Lions

In the summer of 2000, MassiveMusic heralded its birth with a party on a beach in Cannes during the annual International Advertising Festival, Cannes Lions. On the 23rd of June, MassiveMusic will host its 10th party with clients and friends on that same beach in Cannes.

A lot has happened since 2000. The seed that was planted in Amsterdam, still home to MassiveMusic’s headquarters, started to branch out in 2004 when, again under the starry nights in Cannes: “We had business intercourse with some Americans,” jokes founder and CEO Hans Brouwer. As a result, MassiveMusic NewYork became a fact in 2005. LA quickly followed, opening its doors in 2008 and was soon working on tracks for high-profile clients. A year later, ex-MassiveMusic Amsterdam creative director Diederik van Middelkoop set up a Shanghai studio, becoming the first international music production company in China.

Earlier this year the company reached its ultimate highpoint when they were asked to do the music for Nike’s already famous football campaign ‘Write The Future’. Brouwer: “When we were selected to take part in this advertising saga, we realized this was the perfect crown on our 10 year anniversary.” MassiveMusic, being a music agency, specializes in writing and sourcing music for brands and their advertising campaigns, and for broadcast design and film.

The company chose a 10 year-old guitar virtuoso to star in their Cannes party teaser film. Brouwer: “Working in an industry that is focused on what’s new all the time, becoming 10 might be considered getting old. But when we see kids at the age of 10 master an instrument, we get excited. We thought this was a good way of saying: “Hey, we’re only 10. See what we can do in another 10 years from now.” Some 2,500 people are expected at the party.

Storms devastate beaches in Cannes and Nice

Although the photo is quite pretty, the damage is very real. Jacques Gumbau’s photo was taken yesterday afternoon just before a major storm devastated beaches across Nice and Cannes, leaving some plans for the Cannes Film Festival in tatters. Each year, the festival welcomes a side industry that lives off parties, fashion shows and receptions, many of which are concentrated on the beach restaurants and clubs. Waves of between 8 and 10 metres hit the beaches causing substantial damage and swamping the Croisette. The open-air TV studio of CANAL+ is also located prominently on the beach. Worse damage was noted in Nice, however, where the beach was almost wiped clean of every man-made structure overnight.

The mayors of both Cannes and Nice have requested that the storm be recognised as a natural catastrophe. However, it follows other storms earlier in the year and a debate about whether beach restaurants are not actually putting themselves in danger. The number of storms has increased over the years.

Snow in Cannes

Everything seemed to slow down on Sunday January 31, when huge snowflakes started falling on Cannes. This shot of the beach with the Carlton in the background is from Mikael Rousson, via Twitter.

Last May, the Carlton was turned into a winter wonderland to promote “A Christmas Tale”. But no, this wasn’t another publicity stung. It was actually real snow! It’s odd, as Tweeters from Nice noted there was no snow there.

Just a few hours later, the sun came out and everything was back to normal.

Jellyfish alerts in Cannes and Nice

Jellyfish – a recurring problem in every Mediterranean country – have been causing problems along the Côte d’Azur. It is reported that in one day, the emergency services received 500 calls for the stretch between Cannes and Nice alone. Local authorities have reacted by installing nets and in some cases “jellyfish hoovers”, boats equipped to remove them from the sea.

Jellyfish used to be a problem every eight years or so. However changes in the Mediterranean mean that they are now an almost annual fixture. Scientists are not sure why, claiming changes in the biosystem or an increase in the sea’s average temperature are responsible.

For people visiting the Mediterranean, remember to check for flags or signs on the beach before entering the water.

Cannes amongst Forbes’ "Top 10 Topless Beaches"

Forbes has just published their Top 10 choice of topless beaches, which includes Cannes. As they say themselves, “Call us old-fashioned, but we tend to favor topless beaches rather than nude ones. Nearly all European beaches are topless, and sunbathers there have a blasé attitude towards nudity, which means no gawking or cameras”. The fact that they recommend staying during the film festival is not very helpful as 1) there are more cameras per square meter than at a Nikon factory and 2) it’s almost impossible to book a hotel. So their suggestion of the Carlton is a bit optimistic. You might want to book now for next May.

Other beaches on the hotlist include Santorini (Greece), Bora Bora (Polypenesia) and St Martin (West Indies). Funnily enough, Cannes is amongst the cheapest of the bunch.
