Anyone intending to attend TFWA 2011 should register straight away to make savings. Pre-registration for the Tax Free World Association (TFWA) World Exhibition in Cannes, September 18–23, ends on August 18, 2011. After that date anyone wishing to attend the event needs to register on arrival.

Workshops and major brands

Pre-registrations for the exhibition and conference have been “very satisfactory both in the quantity and quality of visitors” compared with last year’s event, which can’t be a bad thing given the current economic climate.

Two breakfast workshops during TFWA World Exhibition will explore the emerging markets of Asia and the airline, cruise and ferry retail channels. This year’s event will also feature over 400 suppliers from across all product categories such as Tommy Hilfiger, Desigual, Fratelli Rossetti, Hédiard, Bourjois, Nuxe, The Sharper Image, Gérard Bertrand and José Cuervo.

Conferences to debate “a brand new world”

The TFWA World Exhibition 2011 conference, to be held on Monday September 19, will feature high profile speakers from the fields of geopolitics, economics and the luxury business. Salvatore Ferragamo CEO Michele Norsa will look at how traditional luxury brands can adapt to a changing world and changing consumers. IMD World Competitiveness Centre director Stéphane Garrelli, economist and business school professor, will take a region-by-region look at the global economy, identifying factors affecting growth and highlighting potential growth hotspots. Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan will give the keynote presentation, bringing his unparalleled global political experience and insight to bear on some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, including the dramatic changes underway in the Middle East and North Africa. TFWA president Erik Juul-Mortensen’s ‘State of the Industry’ address will reflect on an industry in evolution, coping with constant change in the geopolitical, macro-economic and social worlds and adapting to new realities.

One of the complaints made about Midem in recent years was the drop in live shows. The good news is that Midem 2011 has started a new sidebar for younger or lesser-known acts. 21 groups drawn from Canada, Germany, France, Austria, the United States, Russia, Spain and Britain, will perform live between January 23 and January 25, giving MIDEM delegates the opportunity to discover new ‘underground’ acoustic talent without having to leave MIDEM’s venue, the Palais des Festivals in Cannes. All groups will appear for a second series of evening gigs at one of the three Cannes venues which are also hosting the Fringe – Morrison’s Irish Pub, The Lounge and The Quay’s Irish Pub.

“Following the success of the Fringe programme last year, MIDEM 2011 will provide new talent with exposure to music executives both during the day and at night. By bringing the Fringe into the Palais des Festivals, MIDEM underlines that the creation of music and the development of new talent are at the heart of what the event stands for,” says Dominique Leguern, Director of MIDEM.

The hotel was built on the former site of the Palais des Festivals of Cannes, the original site of the International Film Festival from its inception in 1946 to the mid 1980s. Recently renovated, the design reflects its glamorous film heritage, paying tribute to the film stars of the past including Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, and Elizabeth Taylor.

On a practical level, the hotel’s location on the Croisette and its ample roof mean that it is often used by film and TV companies as their headquarters during the festival and market. The JW Marriott Hotel Cannes will offer an 820-seat theatre auditorium and 16 meeting rooms with 12,900 square-feet of flexible space. Its recent renovation (and re-naming) brought it a five-star rating. Marriott is currently in acquisition mode in Europe.

The most important is at the site itself, which now features a larger space, the new Golden Village and Marine Croisette areas.

New exhibitors this year include Polaroid Eyewear, Chinese cosmetics brand Herborist, La Martiniquaise rum and Danish jewellery supplier Dyrberg. Each will, needless to say, be bringing stylish products in their suitcases. Amongst the premieres this year will be the new Manon range from Belgian chocolate manufacturer Duc d’O and the unveiling of new retail space for the Caran d’Ache writing supplier (photo).

In other news, Lebanese/British pop star Mika will be performing at the Grand Auditorium as part of the Premium evening, which includes dinner and and après-show party on the beach. But you’ll have to blag yourself onto the guest list for this one as it by invitation only.

TFWA will be held October 17-21 in Cannes. For details, visit TFWA.

Ausili was awarded a $25,000 cash prize plus Sony digital SLR camera equipment and he joins previous L’Iris d’Or winners David Zimmerman and Vanessa Winship as a member of the World Photographic Academy.
Tommaso Ausili said at the ceremony: “I’m very glad to receive this award. Since I started this series on the death of animals, I have felt an enormous sense of guilt, and this prize goes some way to repay that debt. Thanks to the Sony World Photography Awards for honouring my work with this prize.”

Photographer Vitali Seitz was announced as the 2010 Sony World Amateur Photographer of the Year at the ceremony. Based in Munich, but originally from Siberia, Vitali’s image entitled “Hauskonzert: Home concert” was taken at an informal concert as part of a family birthday and also won the amateur Music category. In addition to his title Vitali picked up a $5,000 cash prize and Sony digital SLR camera equipment.

All the winning and shortlisted images of the 2010 awards are on display until 27 April as part of the World Photography Festival in Cannes. The images will then be showcased in the Sony World Photography Awards Global Tour exhibition which will tour around the world throughout 2010 and 2011.

The final presentation of the evening went to celebrated American photojournalist Eve Arnold. Presented the day after her 98th birthday, the Lifetime Achievement Award was collected by her grandson Michael Arnold. Eve’s 50 year career has captured some of history’s most memorable figures from Malcolm X to Marilyn Monroe and was the first female photographer to be taken on by Magnum. A retrospective of Eve’s work, curated by Zelda Cheatle, is currently on display at the Palais des Festival.

Astrid Merget, Creative Director of the World Photography Organisation, said: “The quality of work submitted by this year’s professional photographers was remarkable. Narrowing down so many impressive selections to just 36 finalists was a feat worthy of a very distinguished jury like ours to undertake. We are all thrilled with the results and honoured to have such talented photographers participate in our awards programme.”

Yoshiyuki Nogami, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Europe, said: “We are once again honoured to support this unique competition which celebrates the power of photography. This year’s contest has produced an inspired showcase of phenomenal photographic talent and we congratulate all these deserving winners.”
