New Zealand’s Jane Campion has been nominated head of the Cinéfondation jury during the upcoming Cannes film festival 2013. Campion is no stranger to Cannes, as her work has been shown there several times, winning a coveted Palme d’or for “The Piano” in 1993, twenty years ago.
“A child of Cannes”
Gilles Jacob, president of the Festival de Cannes and the Cinéfondation, declared: “Jane is a child of Cannes. I know this as it was I who selected her first three short films for the Festival, because I liked her style and consistency. Naively perverse young girls, teens closed in around their solitude, and women mulling over desires and regrets: Jane’s is a passionate universe that she firmly holds in check as she draws these intricate group portraits. I am delighted that the love story between Lady Jane and the Festival continues today as she takes on the role of president.”

Jane Campion is a New Zealand screenwriter, producer, and director. She is only the second of four women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and is the first—and thus far, only—female filmmaker in history to receive the Palme d’Or, which she received for directing the acclaimed film The Piano (1993), for which she also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
