Thomas Vinterberg to preside Un Certain Regard

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg will be this year’s President of the Jury for the “Un Certain Regard” sidebar at the Festival de Cannes 2013. With Lars Von Trier and other artists, he was one of the founding members of the Dogme95 movement that aimed to return to formal austerity in film making.

His breakout film proved to be “Festen” (The Celebrations) for which he received the Festival de Cannes Jury Prize from the President of the Jury, Martin Scorsese, in 1998.

In 2012, for the 65th edition of the Festival, he presented “Jagten” (The Hunt), for which the remarkable lead actor Mads Mikkelsen won the Best Actor Award. The film went on to be successful in a number of countries.

Several years later Vinterberg hooked up with Mikkelsen for “Another Round” to considerable success.

Sofia Coppola to open cycle

It has also been announced that Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” will open Un Certain Regard on May 16, 2013. Based on facts, it tells the tale of a group of adolescents who are fascinated by “beautiful people” and brands. They track the whereabouts and activities of celebrities online so that they can rob their homes. Over three million dollars of jewellery, clothing and shoes were stolen from Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and others.

Attending screenings of the Certain Regard sidebar

The Un Certain Regard  section is one of several events (or “sidebars”) that take place alongside the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival. It typically chooses movie with a very particular approach or tone of voice. “Donbas” by Ukraine’s Sergei Loznitsa was featured in 2018. Iceland’s “Hrutar/Rams” is another example of the singular film-making that is recognized at the event.
