The Cannes Film Festival, one of the most prestigious cinema events in the world, is gearing up for its 78th edition, and the announcement of this year’s jury president has cinephiles buzzing. French actress Juliette Binoche, a celebrated figure in global cinema, has been chosen to preside over the jury for the festival, which runs from 13-24 May 2025.
This marks a significant moment in Cannes history, as Binoche follows in the footsteps of last year’s jury president, Greta Gerwig, director of the smash hit Barbie. For only the second time in the festival’s storied history, a female president is to be succeeded by another. The last time this happened? The 1960s, when the legendary Italian actress Sophia Loren took over from Olivia de Havilland (Gone with the Wind).
Juliette Binoche: A Cannes Icon and Global Cinema Treasure
At 60, Juliette Binoche is no stranger to Cannes or the international film circuit. Her relationship with the festival spans decades, starting back in 1985 when she first ascended the iconic red-carpeted stairs as a young actress. Now, nearly 40 years later, she returns in a historic and honorary role as jury president.
Reflecting on her journey, Binoche shared in a heartfelt statement: “I look forward to sharing these moments of life with the members of the jury and the public. In 1985, I climbed the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress. I did not imagine that I would return 40 years later in this honorary role of president of the jury. I weigh the privilege, the responsibility, and the absolute necessity of humility.”
