Inside news and tips for visitors to Cannes

I’ve seen some pretty funky delegate bags in Cannes. I’ve also seen some bags that fall apart after a few weeks. But in either case, who wants to walk around town with the same bag as everyone else? Come on, you’ve come this far to melt into the masses? I thought not.
The Cannes or Bust messenger bag ensures you stroll the Croisette with the brightest bag in town. It has a large and a smaller compartment and a discreet Cannes or Bust logo (in American typewriter no less). All this for €23.90 plus shipping. Check it here. Not only does it look good, it’s made for delegates with plenty of room for folders, brochures or – why not – swimming trunks.

We often get asked about how to attend screenings at the Cannes festival. The short answer is yes, there is a way. And it’s called Cannes Cinephile, a programme that enables locals and visitors to possibly catch a screening or two. The locals are given special treatment. If they sign up for a badge by March 5 2010, they are entitled to catch movies at La Licorne, Le Raimu and Studio 13 cinemas. The badge can also be obtained by foreign movie clubs. Some 4,000 badges are granted annually, but there are always more requests than there are badges. So they ask for “motivated” submissions.
People without badges might still get lucky, as a number of tickets are made available at the above cinemas and at the Cannes Tourist Office near the Pantiero during the festival. Note that these are for movie buffs, not gawkers. So they do not entitle holders to attend red-carpet screenings. Visit Cannes Cinema for details. Click this post for a longer explanation and details of the beach screenings.
On the face of it, it was an inventive idea. But the face has soured. According to a report from Reality Check, property company Drivers Jonas has been fined €100,000 for setting up shop in the Pavillon Croisette in Cannes rather than taking a stand in the Palais des Festivals at a cost of €7000. MIPIM sued them for “parasitical” behaviour.
I’ve always known people who attend Cannes fairs without paying the entrance fee. I can remember seeing Freddy Cousaert (who got Marvin Gaye back into the record business) holding court from a kerbside table, calling over passing acquaintences to do business. Organisers Reed Midem exert quite an influence on the town and during the Cannes film festival, people without a badge cannot enter many of the major hotels. They take these things seriously in this town.
Squatting a restaurant looked like a great idea. But I doubt they will be trying it again any time soon. There’s a clear line between entertaining people outside the Palais and riding piggyback on a major event. If you’re attending Cannes and want to organise something like this, my tip is to play safe and take passes to the event in addition to entertaining in the café/restaurant/club. The key point seems to be that they were not even registered with MIPIM, and were therefore perceived to be leeching the event. Drivers Jonas is considering an appeal.

The Cannes Independent Film Festival (which is not officially affiliated with the Cannes festival itself) presents selections during the Marché du Film, the international film marketplace where films are bought and sold in Cannes. Several films from CIFF 2009 were sold in the Marché du Film and went on to international release, including I AM FROM TITOV VELES and COWBOYS AND ANGELS.
Selected filmmakers are presented with an opportunity to screen at the Palais des Festivals, sell in the Marché du Film, attend CIFF marketing and sales courses, have their film listed in CIFF’s Official Market Guide, network with attending industry executives, and attend launch and promotion parties at the CIFF villa. The Festival offers awards in eleven categories with sponsored prizes totaling over $100,000 in value. CIFF also offers a number of travel and accommodation allowances to participating filmmakers, covering airfare, accreditation, and lodging in the villa.
Submissions are open. For details, visit CIFF.
The first Open de France Poker, February 20-28, could be one of the year’s main events. Total prize money of €570,000 is up for grabs, with up to 300 players per event. 50 croupiers across 8 floors will hande the players that will reportedly include professionals such as Rémy Biechel, Thomas Fougeron, François Tardieu and the Winamax and 770 teams. Buy-ins reach €2,000.
The event is being held at the stylish Royal Casino, Av. Général de Gaulle 605 in Mandelieu. For details, visit Open de France. Our tip: if you’re playing, you’ll want to stay somewhere in Mandelieu. However, you might not necessarily want to book for the while time in advance unless you intend to stay the whole time!
Low cost carrier EasyJet has just announced that it will start operating 6 weekly flights between Rome Fiumicino and Nice airport as of March 12. A quick look at their site threw up prices of between €25.99 to €38.99, which seems reasonable. EasyJet flies to 15 other destinations from Nice and carried 2.1 million passengers last year.
Rome is already served by Air France, Alitalia and just one other low cost airline, Blu-Express. Our tip: if you’re coming or going to Milan, you might also want to check the special deals on Trenitalia.
Cannes and the south of France are eminently photogenic. So it’s only apt perhaps that the Sony World Photography festival will take place in the Palais des Festivals, Cannes between April 22-27. The line-up looks tasty, with photographer programmes from the likes of iStockphoto (tips on shooting for stock photos), a talk from Idris Khan and Adrian Boot delving into the challenging craft of portraiture photography and asking the question: Can a photograph ever tell a truth about the subject? There are also portfolio reviews, exhibitions and a bunch of people talking shop – never a bad thing. Don’t forget the obligatory glitz of the awards ceremony.
I’m just not too sure how much all this costs. They have an à la carte pricing policy that looks great value to me even when I add bits up. For details, visit the World Photography Festival.
Here’s a tip from us: The good news is that this falls in an off-season time for the hotels. So you can find great deals on our Cannes hotel deals site.

According to an article in Travel Daily News, the Palais Stéphanie is now the owner of a fifth star. Built on the location of the original Palais des Festivals, the 261-room hotel is the most modern of the so-called “palaces” on the Croisette, previously known as the Noga Hilton. The process for earning the fifth star involved extensive appraisals and surprise audits encompassing 124 mandatory and a hundred optional criteria.
The hotel’s atrium is a popular meeting point during the Cannes Film Festival, while its top floor is often used for receptions and TV interviews. The redesign pays tribute to the legendary film stars of festivals past, such as Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, and Liz Taylor.
Further details and bookings. The hotel is already fully booked for the Cannes Film Festival 2010.
Glamour, sunshine, contacts. Yup, you can get all that. But you could also get sore feet, hotels miles outside town and hefty bills. Check our tips for getting the most from your time in Cannes.
