TB personality and exec Simon Cowell receives major industry award

MIPCOM’s personality of the year award 2014 will go to Simon Cowell, a creative figurehead of the entertainment industry. Cowell, both producer TV, director of a music label and world-renowned talent contest judge, will receive the award at a gala dinner that will bring together the major players in the industry on Tuesday, October 14 at the Carlton hotel in Cannes.

X-Factor

Cowell’s Syco Entertainment is one of the foremost music, film, and television production companies responsible for some of the most successful global music and television franchises. Syco’s television hits include the two international phenomenon formats: “Got Talent” and “The X Factor” both created by Cowell. The Syco Music roster includes stars such as One Direction, Little Mix, Susan Boyle, Ella Henderson, Il Divo, Labrinth, Cher Lloyd, Fifth Harmony, Alex & Sierra and Collabro.

Unlike the vast majority of TV execs, Cowell has also managed to become a well-known figure to audiences himself, through his trenchant views as a talent judge (to put it politely). Sometimes criticised for representing all that is wrong with the current entertainment business in terms of short-termism, he has nonetheless very successfully negotiated the trend away from record sales to far broader sources of revenue.

MIPCOM keynote

Simon Cowell will also speak at a MIPCOM keynote on Monday 13 October in the grand auditorium of the Palais des Festivals. Well known to TV viewers on both sides of the Atlantic, Cowell has left an indelible mark on 21st century popular culture both through TV programs intended for a wide audience and by its investment in the music sector.
