For the third year running, the Majestic Barrière in Cannes has been singled out in the World Luxury Hotel Awards. The 2012 award is as the Best Coastal Hotel, competing against some of the world’s most prestigious and glamorous hotels.
Art Deco hotel
The Majestic, as it is more simply known, was built between 1923 and 1926 on the site of the former Beau Rivage hotel. The architect Théo Petit (who also designed the Hotel Normandie in Deauville) gave it a stylish Art Deco façade. It originally had only one street-side wing and was two levels lower than the current design. Extra floors were added later and the second western wing was opened in 2010. Mouldings were made of the original wing to ensure a perfect harmony between the two.
During the war, it was requisitioned by De Gaulle and turned into a field hospital for French forces, notably for wounded from the battle of Authion.
Given its five-star status and the fact it is located opposite the Palais des Festivals, the Majestic has a close history with the Festival de Cannes. Its outdoor swimming pool has been used for countless poolside glamour photo shoots.
5-star amenities
Guests at the hotel can enjoy views of the sea and Palais, as well as saunas and all the goodies one could expect from one of the Riveria’s best-known hotels. It also boasts three restaurants and its own jetty, which is also very popular during the various festivals and trade fairs held in Cannes. It offers 265 rooms and 84 suites, including two penthouses.
