Inside news and tips for visitors to Cannes

Everything seemed to slow down on Sunday January 31, when huge snowflakes started falling on Cannes. This shot of the beach with the Carlton in the background is from Mikael Rousson, via Twitter.
Last May, the Carlton was turned into a winter wonderland to promote “A Christmas Tale”. But no, this wasn’t another publicity stung. It was actually real snow! It’s odd, as Tweeters from Nice noted there was no snow there.
Just a few hours later, the sun came out and everything was back to normal.
Coca-Cola and ad agency Ogilvy have announced they will award a €10,000 development contract at MIPTV 2010 for the best branded content idea to engage teens, as part of the 5th annual Content 360 Challenge. The idea can take the shape of a TV show, a web movie series, a mobile application or ad game, etc.
The Content 360 Challenge at MIPTV offers an opportunity to pitch directly to media decision makers, including Coca-Cola executives, in Cannes next April 13-14. Entry is free and the deadline for submitting a short description of your idea is February 15.
Check http://www.miptv.com/content360 to compete. In addition to Coca-Cola, there are 5 other pitching categories supported by TF1, National Film Board of Canada, Korea Communications Commission and the European Commission.
With taxis costing upwards of €90 depending on where you are staying in Cannes, it’s always worth checking the other options. If you are travelling with one or two people and have travelled a bit, you might just want to get downtown as quickly as possible in which case the taxis are a tempting option. If you are travelling alone, on a budget and have a little time, there are three cheap ways to get to Cannes.

I thought it might be interesting to create a tipsheet for Midem. If you have any tips, feel free to add them as a comment below. If you are involved with the act, add your details or company name at least so people can reach you. But be selective!
The video above is “Se ne va” by the Italian pop quartet Millionaire Blonde, which I think could be a pretty strong summer hit (so much so that I just did the English lyrics, which is why I give them star billing!). If interested for licensing, get in touch with me. Click through for some other great music tips.

With only 9 days to go, there are still opportunities for staying in Cannes for Midem. A quick scan of the available properties turned up a few 2-star budget hotels at under €100 a night. But these are, um, colourful is probably the most polite description – not exactly honeymoon locations. If you stay in Juan-les-Pins or La Bocca, there are rooms in the flat-hotels (or résidhotel as they are sometimes called). Check that you can check-in outside office hours if you arrive late or leave early, as part of the reason they are cheap is that they don’t offer round-the-clock front desk services. You’ll find some in the search engine at right.
The other option – particularly for those not travelling alone – is to book a studio or apartment in town. There is a full range, from ones with several bedrooms to smaller ones with beds and/or fold-out beds. Many have wi-fi connections. They start at under €900 and head upwards (there is no limit in a town like Cannes but the good news is that there is an absolutely huge range which means you can always find something). Check for the latest Midem deals here. A tip: check the maps to ensure you are within walking distance of the Palais. If you use a car, there is an underground car park under the Palais that you enter from the Pantiero direction.

Cannes Lions has announced that its prices for 2010 will be frozen at 2009 levels. Like every trade fair, Cannes Lions saw a drop in attendance last year. But there are already questions as to whether a price freeze will be enough to win back participants. When the effects of music “sharing” hit the music industry, Midem froze prices and has continued nonetheless to improve the quantity and quality of conferences and services (MidemNet is included in this year’s event rather than being a separate off-shoot). But even so, numbers fell last year. It wasn’t so much that people didn’t want to come, it was simply that the industries have far less people to send.
The advertising industries is facing similar effects although with a time lag. I’d like to think that a price freeze could turn the situation around, but as a 3-day pass still costs €1,499 (not incl. VAT) I feel there will be many people making a very quick choice. Participants can invite one guest at €300, which is something. But these prices don’t include the costs of entering material for consideration, nor travel and food. I’m still surprised there doesn’t seem to be an early bird rate.
On the positive side, Cannes Lions has teamed up with the Berlin School of Creative Leadership to launch a brand-new venture called The Cannes Creative Leaders Programme, a two-week training initiative taking place in Berlin and Cannes in June for industry executives.
